Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat and Streaming are Finally Getting Updates and AI Capabilities
After nine years since introducing the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Google has finally released the fourth-generation model. Simultaneously, Google has unveiled the next-generation version of its Chromecast streaming device, now known as the Google TV Streamer. Both devices come equipped with advanced artificial intelligence features powered by Google’s Gemini large language model, alongside notable hardware enhancements and modern designs that seamlessly fit into contemporary homes.
A New Era of Streaming with Google TV Streamer
Since its debut in 2013, Google has sold over 100 million Chromecasts. Anish Kattukaran, head of product at Google Home and Nest, highlighted that while the original Chromecast served the needs of past streaming enthusiasts, the new Google TV Streamer is designed for the future. Unlike its predecessor, this device is a sleek, elongated oval intended to rest on a media console, available in porcelain and hazel (the latter exclusive to the Google Store).

The Google TV Streamer features multiple ports for Ethernet, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C power, with a gentle back curve that conceals connected cables. The remote control includes a button to locate it with an audible ping and ergonomic design adjustments. It now features a customizable button to access a preferred app or the Google Home Panel, providing quick access to smart home devices directly from the TV interface.
Performance improvements are the most significant upgrade, addressing common complaints about the Google TV operating system. The new Streamer boasts a 22% faster CPU, increased RAM, and four times the storage capacity (up to 32 GB) compared to the previous model. It supports 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, Dolby Vision and Atmos, HDR10, and HDR10+. However, it only supports Wi-Fi 5, despite its advanced capabilities.
The Google TV Streamer is priced at $100 and is available for preorder now, with sales starting on September 24. Google will continue selling the Chromecast With Google TV model until stock runs out, with no plans to restock it.
Nest Thermostat Enhanced Thermostat Functionality
The original Nest Thermostat was revolutionary, and the new fourth-generation model aims to build on that legacy. Drawing design inspiration from the Pixel Watch, the new Nest Learning Thermostat features a 60% larger screen with a bezel-less design and a rotating metal dial. It is available in silver, obsidian, and polished gold finishes.
One of the key innovations is the use of 100% recycled cobalt in the battery, marking a first for any product, and the packaging is entirely plastic-free. The thermostat also has a 12-wire backplate for broader system compatibility, including heat pumps. Google’s Soli radar technology powers the Dynamic Farsight feature, which displays different information based on proximity and enhances the Home and Away feature for energy conservation.
The learning capabilities of the thermostat have been improved, with a new Smart Schedule feature that suggests or automatically adjusts the schedule based on user habits. It can now consider external weather conditions to optimize indoor temperatures and includes an Adaptive Eco mode for energy savings.
Each fourth-gen Nest Learning Thermostat includes a redesigned Nest Temperature Sensor, which can be placed around the house to provide more comprehensive temperature readings. These sensors are available separately for $40 or three for $100 and are backward compatible with older Nest models.
The thermostat also features a System Health Monitor to detect potential HVAC system issues and a Smart Ventilation feature to assess outdoor air quality before pulling it into the home.
The new Nest Learning Thermostat, along with the sensor, is available for preorder at $280 and will go on sale on August 20.
Google Assistant’s New Integrations
Google has been integrating its Gemini chatbot and large language models into its products over the past year. This integration significantly enhances Google Assistant, making it more conversational and capable of maintaining context across multiple commands. The new Gemini-powered Assistant will offer improved voice quality and more detailed motion alerts from security cameras.
Despite the introduction of various Gemini models, Google is not replacing Assistant yet; instead, it will continue to enhance its capabilities with Gemini. The new Google Assistant experience is available for select Nest Aware subscribers as part of a public preview and will roll out more broadly in 2025.
These updates to Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat and Chromecast reflect the company’s commitment to integrating advanced AI features and sustainable materials into their products, providing users with smarter and more efficient home technology solutions.
