WhatsApp Introduces Voice Message Transcripts
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature to make voice messages more accessible. Users can now transcribe voice messages into text, offering a solution for situations where listening to audio is inconvenient. This feature mirrors a similar one launched by Apple’s Messages app with iOS 17, one of WhatsApp’s competitors.
The transcripts are generated directly on the user’s device. WhatsApp emphasizes that these transcripts remain private and inaccessible to others, ensuring user confidentiality.

To enable this feature, go to your settings, navigate to the “Chats” section, and turn on “Voice message transcripts.” You can also select your preferred language for transcription. Once activated, you can transcribe a voice message by long-pressing it and selecting the “transcribe” option. The feature does not automatically transcribe every message, giving users control over when to use it.
The rollout is global and supports a variety of languages based on the operating system. iOS users with version 16 or later can access transcripts in languages such as English, Spanish, French, German, and Chinese. iOS 17 adds support for additional languages like Danish, Malay, and Hebrew. On Android, transcription currently supports English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian, with plans to expand language options in the future.
This update highlights WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user convenience while maintaining privacy. It’s a significant step for those relying on voice messages as a communication tool.
